This trip will be an approximate re-enactment of the Battle of San Jacinto, where Paul Revere ("one if by land and two if by sea") snuck up on Santa Ana and began the Allied invasion of France, or something.

Anyway, here's the plan to see some celebratory fireworks from the water:
4:30 PM - meet at Bayland Park and unload
5:00 PM - paddle out of Goose Creek across Tabbs Bay to the cut between Hog Island and Atkinson Island
6:00 PM - arrive at shell beach for picnic dinner and to watch the big boats go by in the Houston Ship Channel
7:30 PM - depart Atkinson Island to Bayland Park
8:30 PM - arrive in Bayland Park as the sun goes down behind the Fred Hartman Bridge for quick pit stop. Paddle up Goose Creek
9:30 PM - Baytown July 4 fireworks
10:00 PM - Paddle back to Bayland Park
10:30 PM - load up boats and head home

Round trip to Atkinson Island is about 6 miles, Level 2. Round trip up Goose Creek is another 3 miles, Level 1.
Tabbs Bay crossing is 3/4 mile and is usually benign but could be choppy in an east wind. There will likely be some light boat traffic. We will stay well away from the Houston Ship Channel.

You can do either leg of the trip or both, but please let me know before the trip what legs you are doing.

The Goose Creek portion of this trip will be a night paddle, so we will need to be properly equipped. I will bring glow sticks to affix fore and aft to each boat. These make us visible to each other without blinding ourselves.
Bring a marine radio if you have one.
U S Coast Guard also requires a white light visible from 360 degrees. (A waterproof deck light, headlamp, or secured flashlight is ok.)
A Visual Distress Signal (bright white light with strobe or SOS) is also required. You should have a sound signal, either a loud whistle or a horn.
Go pick up the required night gear if you don't have it.

Lat - lon of the put-in is  29°42'43.12"N,   94° 59'39.30"W
We will launch from the Buddy McBride public boat ramp in Bayland Park on the south side of Highway 146. Business. From HWY 146 Bus, head south on Wyoming Street but don't go as far as the marina. The map link will show you the location. For your phone navigation, enter Bayland Park, Baytown, TX.

The park has ample parking and a porta-potty with variable desirability.

Temperature will be warm, so have plenty or water and sun protection. If we execute our plan we will have our picnic dinner on Atkinson Island.

Hazards -- Light boat traffic of small to medium size in Tabbs Bay. Night visibility requires proper gear and staying together. Tabbs Bay has some oysters and below-water pilings, and can be choppy in an east wind. The boat ramp may be slippery. We have not had a car security problem at Bayland Park but it is in a populated area and is not regularly patrolled.
