March 19th Meeting / Cancelled
Cancelled, hope to see you on the water, praying we can all get together in May. Our meeting location (Precinct 3 Mendenhall Community Center) is postponing gatherings there as a precautionary measure to further limit possible exposure to Corvid-19.
-------------------------------
We'll cover upcoming trips & training events, lay out committee assignments and take your ideas for 2020 destinations.
Our March meeting speaker is Dennis Jones. Dennis worked for the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department for over 30 years. During that time, he served as Park Naturalist, Resource Manager, Park Superintendent, Park Historian, and Regional Interpretive Specialist. Prior to his service with TPWD, he worked at the Chemical Transportation Center, for chemical spills, leaks, and fires in Washington D.C.
At that same time, he worked part time in the Division of Birds at the National Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian, under the supervision of Roxie Laybourne, bird expert extraordinaire. After retirement from government service he became a Coastal Warden for Audubon Texas and continues in that position today.
Dennis will frame his presentation around the following:
1) Identifying birds we see while kayaking the Upper Texas bays, bayous, and Gulf.
2) Learning about the do's and don'ts of paddling / camping around these birds; and
3) The conservation efforts for these birds, including historically how these species have fared, what is happening currently, and what we can do as individuals to give them the best chance at survival and flourishing.
