Two rivers meet here on the eastern edge of Texas, creating wild and diverse habitats. Come explore the lake, sloughs and forest trails of this very special place at the edge of the Big Thicket.

This event will be three nights of car camping in the Hen House Ridge Unit campsites at Martin Dies Jr. State Park.  You are responsible for making your own reservations or making arrangements to share the cost of a site with other participants. Martin Dies is an easy two hour drive about 125 miles northeast of Houston between Woodville and Jasper.

Arrive whenever you can on Friday or Saturday to camp or just come for the day paddles.  We will do day paddles on Saturday, Sunday and maybe Monday. The current plan is to paddle Steinhagen Reservoir one day and the other day try to paddle up the Neches River to the mouth of the Angelina River. Mondays paddle will be short and can be decided by the group. There is also some hiking and mountain biking in the park. Dress accordingly for the weather forecast.

Bring wood for a nigh time campfire if you can.

Directions:

To reach the park from U.S. Highway 69, travel 17 miles east from Woodville on U.S. Highway 190. From U.S. Highway 96, travel 12 miles west from Jasper on U.S. Highway 190. Or from Houston, take U.S. Highway 59 north to Livingston, and then travel east on U.S. Highway 190 for 65 miles to the park via Park Road 48.

After crossing B. A. Steinhagen Lake, turn left onto Park Road 48.
