"Walk-ins" are not welcome on this paddle - sorry - this is prudent risk management.

This "paddling in swell" class is limited to students who self-selected as beginners in surf kayaking this summer and who gained the skills and confidence to move on to paddling in swell.

This is a class, not a destination paddle, so we will launch at Beach Access 4, Surfside Beach, and paddle out through the surf zone to the smooth swells.  We will not be going far from Beach Access 4.  After an hour or so of strokes, rescues, paddling with / against / across the swell we will go back to the beach.  Depending on the conditions, energy levels of paddlers, and number of Trip Leaders present, option exists to do repeated sessions in the swell, or to play in surf, or both.

We will have towlines and experienced Trip Leaders present, but our options are limited in the surf zone - students depend mainly on the own skills to get through the surf.

Sea state and wind limitations would be similar to the surf classes.  The limiting factor is getting out through the surf, so this class will only be held if swells are 3' or less.  Larger swells are no problem to paddle in, but create serious surf on the bar and we might have problems paddling over the bar, and more problems getting back to the beach.

Necessary equipment to participate (same as surf kayaking, plus a shady hat)

(1) a PFD that can be cinched tight at the waist - you WILL be in the water,

(2) a kayak-specific helmet - essential protection from kayaks and head-stands on the sand

Note: helmets can be replaced with sun hats in the swell, but must be worn in the surf zone.

(3) a kayak with watertight compartments in the bow and stern, bow and stern deck lines,

(4) a properly fitting water-tight spray skirt,

(5) if you are going to wear glasses of any type, a very secure glass strap, and

(6) footwear which won't come off in the surf, and has no loose laces or anything that can get snagged during a wet exit

(7) sunscreen
