Abandoned or lost crab traps have been a significant source of mortality for a variety of organisms. They also create pollution and can lead to costly repairs for boaters and fishermen whose motors come in contact with the traps. To address this issue, the Texas Legislature passed the Abandoned Crab Trap Removal Program in 2001. Since 2002, volunteers statewide have removed 31,237 abandoned traps from Texas waters.
