Trip Description: Let's paddle Christmas Bay around Mud Island on Boxing Day (the day after Christmas). This Level 2* paddle is an 8 mile trip that takes place mostly in the morning and usually has a good sea breeze. If there is not enough water to get around the north end of Mud Island, we will paddle eastward past Bird Island to a beach on the bay side of west Galveston Island for a lunch stop. 

Directions to the Put-in: From Houston take I-45 south to Galveston, exit at 61^st street and take a right onto 61^st , drive to Seawall Blvd and take a right.  Drive to the southwest end of Galveston Island, about 25+ miles.  Cross the bridge at San Luis Pass. There is a $2 toll.  Immediately after crossing the bridge, take the first right (Access road 7) and an immediate right heading back on the feeder toward the pass. There will be a sign for the San Luis Pass County Park public boat ramp. Turn left towards the boat ramp, drop off your kayak and gear to the left of the ramp and then park. A small campground store and flush toilets are located next to the parking area.

If you're coming via Surfside, Tx, take the Blue Water Highway (CR 257) to San Luis Pass, about 13.5 miles. Do not cross the toll bridge to Galveston; the San Luis Pass Park is on the left immediately before the bridge.

 

 

 

Hazards: Cold weather and water, some boat traffic, sting rays, oyster reefs.  Be sure to bring your leftover turkey and stuffing sandwiches, water, a spare set of dry clothes and good sun protection.  Water temps should be less than 60F so you'll need to wear appropriate cold weather paddling gear (ex. wet suit, dry suit or equivalent).  If you don't have clothing suitable for the water temp you won't be able to join us. We'll stop for lunch on a shell beach or island. It's helpful to get a lay of the land on Google Earth ahead of time.

This is an ACA sanctioned event. Every participant must wear a PFD, have a signed waiver on file, and be able to perform a wet exit.

Waivers - Please complete our easy to use online waiver if you are a HASK member who has not signed a waiver within the last 12 months or a non- HASK participant. Read the waiver carefully.  You give up substantial rights when you sign it.

Guests – You are welcome to join us for a couple of paddle trips.  HASK will cover your $5 ACA event membership fee for non-ACA members. We hope you'll enjoy the trip and decide to continue paddling with us.
