I-10 to Smith Point Put-In

See the above Google shot.

Drive east from Houston on I-10 and exit to Anahuac. Go south on 563 through Anahuac and continue past the town until you reach Eagle Ferry Rd. Turn left onto Eagle Ferry Rd. - in a few miles you will pass Double Bayou Park on your right. Just past that will be Smith Point Rd./562, turn right. Follow 562, including another hard right, and then stay on 562 until you get to the community of Smith Point. On your right, there will  be a small working harbor with some shrimp boats and oyster boats. Continue past that, and a few hundred yards before you end in the bay, turn right onto Hawkins Camp Rd. Follow Hawkins Camp Road, which will become a dirt road, out to the end of Smith Point, where there is a boat launch and a porta potty (yea!). (We will not be using the old marina/rv camp, as that is closed).

We will meet and depending on the weather and wind direction paddle north and back, paddle around the Vinght et Un Islands (spelling?), or paddle east. We will do a total of approximately 8-10 miles.

We may see some oyster boats in the area. There are numerous oysters on the boat launch at the put in, so we must be careful,  but the shore and the islands have many spots to land that are sandy with shells and some oysters mixed in. Not too bad.

Possible Smith Pint Meanderings

We will land on some of the islands and paddle out to a bird sanctuary that is off limits to landing but has many birds for viewing and photos (long lenses).  The above chart shows a possible route. Again, all depends on the wind and the conditions.
