Trip Description: In and Out paddle from Smith Point.
Smith Point - Lone Oak Bayou (entrance) is a bay trip that we will do if wind is southerly or southeasterly at 12 mph or less. Or northerly or westerly at 8 mph or less. In those conditions, it is a Level 2 13.4 mile round trip.
This route remains relatively close to the bayshore but has no easy bailout opportunities. If the wind is higher, we may substitute an alternate protected trip such as Lake Charlotte or Double Bayou. Check your gas gauge before you drive south of Anahuac.
Even though its early October our main concern will be heat and dehydration. Be sure to have good sun protection and water, water, water. There is no water resupply. Driving directions from Houston:
Enter Spoonbill RV Park, Anahuac in your favorite GPS app. From downtown Houston, take I-10 east about 40 miles. Take Exit 810 and turn right on FM 563 towards Anahuac. Drive 29 miles, Turn right onto Texas County Road or Hawkins Camp road. Follow the road to the end at Spoonbill RV park and launch site.
Paddle route from Smith Point to the mouth of Lone Oak Bayou:
Hazards will include most of the usual suspects - oysters, alligators, fire ants, boat traffic, pilings, sunburn, HEAT. Bring ample water, lunch, sunscreen, hat, insect repellent.
