Towing Training, Brooks Lake, Sugarland, May 9 2026, morning
About this event
We will cover various forms of towing, with and without gear. I will emphasize tows most likely needed on a HASK trip, including contact tows, short line tows, long line tows, single kayak tows, multiple towers, and rafted tows (injured party and "nurse". If time, energy and interest allows, we can practice extraction tows.
The list of possible tow techniques and equipment is very long, so I will focus on the basics first.
We will look at long and short tow gear, including options on floats, carabiners and "daisy chaining". Gear placement on boat and person will be addressed.
We will start discussion about towing on bank at 9 AM. Please be ready for launching when we begin talking, so we can go straight to the water when ready.
Easy put-in from a grassy bank. We are right behind the Marriott Hotel so there are restrooms. No HASK member has yet been challenged when using the hotel restrooms.
Some tows involve a swimmer. Brooks Lake is safe for immersion, as far as I know.
Bring any towing gear you have, including long and short towing kit.
The address of the Marriott hotel is 16740 Creekbend Dr, Sugar Land, TX 77478. You enter the parking lot and can drive right up to the water at the left of the hotel. After unloading, park your car away from prime spots to not inconvenience guests or arouse hotel management.
Move your kayaks to the grass by the water's edge.
Bring snacks, plenty of fluids, hat, sunscreen and an extra set of clothes... just in case.
I want to have a 1:4 instructor:student ratio. If I get more instructors I can increase head count.
