Trip Description:

I have never done anything like this before, so I am somewhat making this up as I go along.  Please be patient with me!

We will meet at 10:00 AM at the launch ramp at Northshore Park on Lake Woodlands.  We will spend  1 - 2 hours doing classroom activities, and then go out on the water to practice.  I think we will eat lunch before launching.

I will be more organised on the day than I am now, but the topics I definitely plan to cover are:

- simple navigation by following a coast and using features
- passage planning, and equipment needed
- maps and charts
- determining direction, speed, time, keeping track of progress
- the compass, true and magnetic north
- maybe more, depending on time.

I WILL NOT be addressing the use of GPS devices.  That's a whole other class. I will probably use one as a check on our guesses of how far and fast we think we have traveled, based on time and paddling effort.  You are welcome to bring yours for the same reason.

Because there aren't currents or tides on Lake Woodlands, I may only cover them in passing, or not at all.  Also a whole other class.

I will give more information on what the class will be like and what to bring in a joining e-mail.

The park has parking close to the launch ramp and a restroom house suitable for changing, if you wish.

We should have cooler temperatures, but it could be hot.  I will monitor the weather for thunderstorms as we get closer to the time.  Dress for immersion.  Woodlands Township tell me that the water quality is monitored continuously and no one is allowed to go on the lake if quality becomes unsafe.  I use the lake often, including for rolling and rescue practice.

If I get another instructor I will increase the trip capacity.

Registration note: If you are a HASK member, you can click through the page that asks for your ACA number and emergency contacts. Your Profile already has that information.

Hazards: It could be cold.  Bring warm drinks and food.  Dress for immersion, though I don't plan any aggressive paddling.  The distances we will cover will probably be small.  If you have wet suits or dry suits you might consider wearing them.  Definitely bring a change of warm clothes.
