About this event
Trip Description: This peaceful natural paddle is surprisingly close to the hustle and bustle of FM1960. Usually a variety of birds can be seen. We
will put in at the Ponderosa Marina on Huffman Cleveland Rd. just west
of FM2100 (aka Crosby Huffman Rd). The marina asks for a nominal parking
fee, $7, and the cars should be safe. There may be a an additional $3 fee for passengers other than driver. There is a self-pay honor box.
We will paddle upstream
several miles and turn around when we've seen enough or can't go any
further upstream. Boat traffic is minimal and virtually non-existent
after a mile of paddling. The trip is suitable for any kayak . This is a good trip for beginners, short and sheltered from wind and waves. We can do some stroke training if there is interest
Directions to the Put-in: Depending on route, the put-in is 30-35 miles from downtown Houston. From the intersection of FM1960 and FM2100 (Crosby Huffman Rd), head north on 2100 approximately 2 miles and turn left on Huffman Cleveland Rd. Drive approximately 1 mile to the Ponderosa Marina which is located on the right hand side just before the bridge over the bayou.
Lat - lon of the put-in is 30° 3.383'N 95° 5.949'W
Hazards: The route is a fairly safe route with a concrete boat ramp to launch from. The ramp may be slick. Light boat traffic for the first mile or two. There will be submerged logs and some low hanging branches along the banks. The weather will probably be warm to hot. Bring water, sunscreen, hat, sun glasses, bug repellent. Remember to dress for possible immersion and bring some dry clothes in a dry bag.
